May 27th, 2019 — Cadence Design Systems, Inc. announced the tapeout of 112G long-reach SerDes IP on Samsung Foundry?s 7nm Low Power Plus (7LPP) process technology. The Cadence? IP for 112G SerDes utilizes 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) and provides the highest speed data link solutions for data center and networking applications, enabling high-performance and cost-effective 100G, 400G and 800G networks. Cadence is ready to engage with customers immediately on next-generation compute server processor, machine learning accelerator and switch fabric system-on-chip (SoC) design enablement.
The data explosion in emerging IoT, video, automotive, artificial intelligence (AI) and 5G communications applications is pushing the limits of cloud data center server, storage and networking infrastructure. 112G SerDes IP doubles the data rate of 56G SerDes, delivering the same overall data throughput with half as many lanes and significantly less power consumption and heat dissipation, which directly reduces capital and operational expenses for cloud service providers. Additional benefits of the 112G SerDes IP optimized for Samsung 7LPP are as follows:
— Programmable power configurations: Unique firmware-controlled adaptive power optimizer provides optimal power and performance tradeoffs and more efficient system designs based on platform requirements;
— Optimal data recovery: Programmable DSP-based architecture allows optimal power delivery for a given reach and provides superior data recovery under lossy and noisy channel conditions;
— Improved flexibility: The extended reach capability enables customers to use lower cost PCBs and achieve greater flexibility in PCB and system design;
— Upgrade path for existing systems: Provides multi-rate support including 112/56Gbps PAM-4 and 56/28/10Gbps non-return-to-zero (NRZ) data rate that offers backward compatibility with legacy equipment operating at lower speeds.
?The Cadence IP for 112G SerDes has been customized for the Samsung Foundry 7LPP process technology, and this successful tapeout is a proof point of our mutual commitment to driving innovative design work,? said Jaehong Park, executive vice president of Design Platform Development at Samsung Electronics. ?The powerful combination of Samsung?s advanced 7LPP process and the Cadence IP for 112G long-reach SerDes yields great potential for our customers to deliver high-performance applications in their respective markets.?
?We are working closely with Samsung Foundry to enable high-performance IP required for emerging cloud computing and data center applications. The deployment of 112G long-reach SerDes IP on the Samsung 7LPP process accelerates the adoption and deployment of cost-effective 100G and 400G networks,? said Babu Mandava, senior vice president and general manager of the IP Group at Cadence. ?In addition to 112G long-reach SerDes IP, we?ve also collaborated with Samsung Foundry to enable a broad set of high-performance IP including GDDR6 and HBM2 to address the needs of ML/AI applications, further accelerating design innovation in the industry.?
